Vêves Castle

The medieval Vêves Castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Beaufort. It is now one of the oldest and best preserved Belgian castles. This castle will not only attract medieval history lovers, but also children that can be disguised as princes or princesses throughout the visit!

Castle of Vêves, the castle of the Sleeping Beauty

The Castle of Vêves appears like a mirage, standing in the middle of the green setting. Each and every visitor will be charmed by this extraordinary view. Even though the castle goes all the way back to the 13th century, the Castle of Vêves disposes of a more modern part as well, which was built in the 18th century. The trails of partial destructions back in the 15th Century still leave their marks.

Once inside the castle, the trail starts in the armory, where authentic weapons are exhibited. Apart from this, visitors can have a look at magnificent pieces of art from throughout the centuries when passing through the other rooms. We were particularly impressed by the 15th century stoneware pavement in the main room and the bridge that leads to the inside garden. Visitors should definitely have a look in the secret room, where the Vêves Castle residents used to go spy and earsdrop on the conversations going on in the armory!

This medieval castle is one of the oldest in Belgium, and for sure one of the best preserved. Because of its location on top of a hill, it was protected against humidity. Even up till today, the owners, the Count and the Countess of Liedekerke-Beaufort, cannot stay in the neighbourhood without spending some time at the domain. Visitors can sense the family atmosphere, created by the numerous family objects, paintings and pictures, gathered in the last 800 years by one and the same family. For 800 years now, Vêves belongs to the same line, and the descendants clearly cultivate the love for their heritage.
