The Freÿr Castle

This castle, which has been decorated with high-value family items, reflects the past in a beautiful way. The anecdotes connected to every room make a visit very interesting. The gardens with hedges, orange trees and fountains, are of astonishing beauty.

The Freÿr Castle

The castle and the garden have been classified as exceptional heritage of Wallonia. Ever since the 14th Century, the building that has been expanded and modified through time, is standing proudly across the rocks towering over the Meuse. The gardens contain refined beauty thanks to its old orange trees from over 350 years old -of which most come from the Lorraine court- and the 6 kilometre-long labyrinth made out of hedges. The fountains, the statues and the rococo pavilion give that extra bit of charm.

The castle contains monumental paintings, rare objects and decoration from the past centuries. Numerous pieces come from the family possessions and were found in the attic. They all tell their own story. The Renaissance chimney in the dining room still demonstrates the tracks of the last flood that reached pretty high. A location on the Meuse river banks has its pros and cons! Since the river has been dredged, disaster risks have fortunately become much smaller. We also notice the beautiful chapel with blue stained-glass windows and furniture from different periods (Louis XIV, Louis XV, …).

Visits without a guide and with a folder are possible, guided visits only upon reservation. The gardens can always be visited with a folder. Last arrival: 3/4 hours before closing.
